PCPSce YRI Lecture Series 2026: Lecture #5

Spread the news

The Prekmurje Literary Republic in the 18th Century

24 September 2026, 14:00 CET.

Speaker: Nina Ditmajer Prando, nina.ditmajer@zrc-sazu.si

The present-day Slovenian region of Prekmurje once encompassed a broader historical territory, part of which now lies within Hungary. Until 1919, the Slovenian-speaking inhabitants of this area lived in three Hungarian counties: Vas, Zala, and Somogy. In these regions, they also encountered Kajkavian and Burgenland Croats. Protestantism was preserved for a long period in Vas County. As a result, during their education, Prekmurje Evangelical pastors were able to come into contact with other Protestants from the German state of Saxony and the Slovak city of Bratislava. They maintained these connections even after returning to Prekmurje and, with their support, developed a Protestant book programme for the Slovenes of Prekmurje. The lecture will illuminate the literary and cultural contacts of Prekmurje Protestant priests, which they fostered with their patrons from German, Slovak, and Hungarian cities.
